Slipper Inn
Annapolis, MD
Dana unlocked the door to the motel room nervously. She looked
around as she opened the door. Had she been followed? She didn't think
so, but she had to be careful. She slipped inside, and closed the door and
bolted it.
Carefully checking out the room, she soon determined that she was
alone. A small device appeared from her overnight bag, which was now on
the double bed. A quick scan of the room indicated no listening devices
were present. They would not be overheard.
She picked up her cellular phone next, dialed a number. She let
it ring twice, then hung up. She waited exactly sixty seconds, then
dialed again. It was answered on the first ring. She said only two words
in to the phone, then hung up. Phones could be tapped, calls could be
traced. No one must know her location.
She undressed as she waited. Slipping out of the flannel shirt
and ratty jeans that had been her disguise, she slipped into the outfit
she had packed for the second half of the adventure planned for that
night.
Fifteen minutes to the second after she had hung up the phone, a
soft knock sounded on the door. Two taps, a pause, then three more. She
didn't answer the door however. It was too dangerous for her to been seen
face to face with the man she awaited. Some one might see them and figure
out what was happening. The secrecy MUST be maintained.
She took out the small tape player and started the tape on it.
The sound of a woman welcoming a man into the room, and the discussion of
mundane matters filled the room as she heard the window in the bathroom
slide open and the soft scuff of a man dropping into the bathroom.
HE was here. They had to be so careful. No one must know about
them. The consequences were too awful to contemplate. But ever since
the night he had arrived at her door, drunk, depressed and they had
comforted each other, she lived for these stolen moments.
They had meet in cheap motels to avoid discovery. Their homes
were too obvious. The dangers there were many. There could be listening
devices, even cameras. Someone could drop by unannounced and interrupt.
Someone might notice a midnight visitor and begin to wonder. Before that
first night, they had been together at all hours of the day and night and no one had wondered. But now, they couldn't take the
chance.
The degree of the subterfuge was not entirely due to his paranoia.
Those who would be watching, those who might try to discover what was
happening here were devious in their methods. They had many electronic
resources and had contacts in the oddest places.
She held her breath as he emerged from the bathroom, his eyes
scanning the room quickly before coming to rest on hers. Then his face
lit up and he embraced her, crushing her lips in a passionate kiss.
He noticed, then the kelly green camisole that was all that
separated his hands from her skin.
"You got my gift, I see," he smiled, his face radiating boyish
glee.
"I love it. How did you know my size?"
"I have my sources..." He kissed her again.
They kept their voices low, letting the noise from the tape player
cover their conversation.
Kissing deeply, their hands were soon busy and before long, the
chemise was discarded on the floor along with the clothing he had been
wearing. They retired to the bed, and forgot about everything but each
other for the next half hour or so. Then they lay in each others arms.
"Dana, do you think he suspects?"
"You mean...?"
"Yes. Do you think he knows?"
"I think he knows something is up, but not what exactly." she
grinned at him. "Or who."
"How much longer do you think we can hide it?" He asked her
sadly.
"It depends. I'm not sure he would believe it if someone told
him though."
"Probably not." He chuckled. "I don't really believe it myself."
"Well, Mulder will have to get used to the idea. I just have to
find the right way to tell him. He's too damned protective of me and I
don't want him harassing you."
"He won't be jealous will he?" Again a worried look.
"No. I don't think so. We realized long ago that I wasn't his
type...and he's definitely not mine. He has the big brother thing down
pat, though."
The two talked a while longer, then ceased altogether as other
things diverted their attention. Soon their thoughts were on nothing but
each other.

Earlier that day.....
Byers looked up as Mulder entered the office.
"Guys, I need to know what you've got." His voice was tense.
"Well, we believe that she is indeed seeing a man, but we still
haven't been able to identify him. They are being extremely careful. "
Langley rolled over to the other two on his office chair, adding
"We know she received a package yesterday. It was delivered by courier,
sender not known. It was paid for in cash. The clerk at the store wasn't
much help. Only said it was an older man, knew what he wanted. A green
satin camisole, size 8. It cost $60 , if you wanna know."
"Who ever he is, he must have some money to throw around." Mulder
grimaced. "I think she's meeting him tonight. I'll try to tail her from
her apartment. I'll rent something. She knows my car." He ran a hand
through his hair. "Why can't she just be honest with me...I can't back
her up if I don't know what's going on."
Langley just shrugged. "Why not just ask her?"
"She told me she was going to the gym last time. The time before
it was a sick friend. She doesn't want me to know, so asking her will
just make her defensive."
"Well, let us know if there is anything else we can do." said
Byers.

9:15 p.m
Mulder put another sunflower seed in his mouth, more out of need
for something to do with his hands than from hunger. He was edgy.
Dana had left her apartment around 8:15. When she had exited the
building, he almost hadn't recognized her, dressed as she was, with a
black cap covering her hair. But he had managed to follow her, as she
took a circuitous route to a seedy motel.
He had managed to keep her in sight without any sign on her part
that she had spotted him. The little Subaru he had rented from
Rent-A-Wreck had helped. He had watched her enter the room cautiously.
Mulder hurried and set up the parabolic listening device he had
brought. He had trouble aiming it, as he couldn't tell if it was her he
was hearing. He fiddled with the controls, listening intently.
A loud snoring. Not her. A whiney female voice complaining about
the long ride, blah blah blah. Not Dana. A few beeps as a phone was
dialed, then two words. "Room ten" and the buzz of a disconnected line.
That had been Dana's voice. He kept listening, heard the rustle of
clothing, then the sounds of pacing.
At 9:30, a man walked past Dana's door, stopping to pick up a
dropped coin or something as he went by. Mulder thought he might have
rapped on the door, but since he didn't stay, dismissed it. A
conversation started in his headsets then. A man and a woman discussing
the weather in Florida compared to Washington. Damn! The device must
have drifted.
He couldn't find her voice again after fiddling with equipment for
several minutes then realized she must have started a tape. He was amazed at the elaborate precautions. He turned it back to the conversation he had heard begin before. The man and woman on the tape were now discussing how much air fare had risen in price the last few years. He wasn't sure, but
thought he heard faint moans and the squeaking of bedsprings in the
background. This was gonna be a long night.

11:21 pm
"Hey, wake up!" She hissed at him.
"Hmmmm? Oh, sorry. Guess I'm just worn out." he grinned at her.
"You're not so bad yourself. I really do have to go. And you
should too. What was your excuse tonight?"
"Dinner at my brother's."
They dressed quietly., the tape still playing in the background.
She crawled up behind him as he laced up the black combat boots he
had worn. He sat on the edge of the bed and she knelt behind him, her
mouth on almost on his ear as she asked, "where and when?"
He twisted, and pulled her around him into his lap. He kissed her
gently and replied, "Unless you have to leave town, how about next
Tuesday, at... the Baldwin Motel?" He kissed her neck as he murmured the
words. She nodded. They kissed again then she got up.
He left the way he had entered, through the bathroom window. She
then clicked off the tape and packed everything in her bag. She couldn't
suppress a chuckle as she thought about how Mulder would react if he knew
that she had just spent the last couple of hours having hot, passionate,
mind-altering sex with Frohike. Nah... he'd never believe it.
She glanced around the room once more, and, assured that she had
left nothing behind, left, locking the door behind her.
END
Did ya guess who it was? I got the idea for this one as I watched Blessing Way... when Frohike visits Dana, drunk and upset at the news of Mulder's death. They seemed to get along pretty well after that. This story was a combination of that and a streak of mischief on my part. Do I think this would ever really have happened? No way... but it was sure fun to write.
