Heather Smith From: Stephen Black [microskirt@hotmail.com] Sent: 14 November 1999 12:26 To: heather.smith@btinternet.com Subject: Where Begin? Where Does a Sadwanker Begin?, 20-24 January 1998 Stephen Black: Why are we sadwankers? In other words, what made us into people with a sexual interest in actresses in Doctor Who? For my part I think it was my youthful experiences watching Jo Grant. I am sure that her Day of the Daleks costume played some small part in creating the underwear fetishist I now am! This was only reinforced by occasional but all too brief flashes of knickers from Sarah and Leela, before we entered the long dark night of long skirts and trousers (not even a visible panty line from Romana). Was it the same for the rest of you guys, or did you come up by a very different route? Kelly Adey: For myself I think that Jo -- costumes and otherwise -- played a large part in forming my sexual tastes full stop. And early Sarah, and possibly even Liz Shaw, although I don't consciously remember having seen her as a child, but *something* has to explain twenty-odd years in which a certain tilt of the head combined with skirts an' kinky boots sets the pulse a-racing... I can imagine arguing with my mother about this -- she believes there's no way a pre-teen can "pick up" or identify his/her own sexual preferences, a point on which I beg (very strongly) to differ ... even as an eight-year-old post-tottette I had a "thing" for Jo, and it's never disappeared Laefl: Jo also had that barely bridled sexual energy which we can perhaps now percieve as comically obvious. "all dolled up for a night on the town with Mike Yates" indeed........ Perhaps I had moved onto "real women" by the time SJS came to the show, but I always thought there was absolutley *nothing* even remotley sexual about SJS. I meaan Leela was all sweaty and in yer face about it and Mary Tamm was the menthol cool godess, but SJS was just, well, Sarah. Big bum and all. Stephen Black: Interestingly I wouldn't agree with this... Sarah was pretty sexy to me even though she was less obviously erotic in her costumes than Jo had been - a reflection of development in '70s fashion, I thould think. As for the big bum, does anyone agree with me that it seemed to get *bigger* as it went on? Russ Massey talked - before our Christmas break - about the statuesqueness of various companions, but it might be worth considering how this quality changed not only between companions but also during their individual stints. Which, I suppose, may be a roundabout way of raising the ungallant topic of whether the ladies concerned put on weight. Though if they put it on in moderation and around the bottom, who's complaining? Laefl: >As for the big bum, does anyone agree with me that it seemed to get >*bigger* as it went on? Absolutley! It's quite pert "Time Warrior" but its a great quivering jelly by "Android Invasion". I perhaps shouldnt be so critical of SJS (by the way Lis, if you're ont he list and lurking we love your work and don't be a stranger) beacsue my dear wife is a dead ringer for Lissie, and is frequently stopped in the streets and asked "werent you in Dr Who" despite the fact she is 15 years younger and 4 inches taller that La Sladen. Sad things is, she loathes Dr Who. Frank Beaumont: One of the appealing things about Sarah was the way she combined playing the terrified female with looking sexy. Glance at many of the photographs and you'll see how well Lis Sladen portrayed that look of anxious helplessness. Makes you fell all protective. Harry Kersey: As you'd expect, I found Sarah sexy precisely *because* of that large bottom! And the fashion of the time being as it was, she got to show it off a great deal, didn't she? From today's point of view it's fascinating that women walked around, apparently unconcerned, in such tight pants with their bottoms uncovered (just as the miniskirt of a few years earlier was a fascinatingly curious phenomenon). In fact, Sarah showed off her sit-upon in just about every way possible except the one I most wanted to see! >As for the big bum, does anyone agree with me that it seemed to get >*bigger* as it went on? I don't think so. Look at Invasion of the Dinosaurs for proof. Elisabeth Sladen has said that her jeans were several sizes too tight in that story, which makes it well worth watching for bottom-fanciers. Check out the scene in Part 6 where she's trying to get out of a room through the inevitable ventilation grille: for several seconds, all there is to look at is her glorious keister! And it's much the same size as later on. And, anyway, is it really so big? Not unattractively so, I'd say. >Which, I suppose, may be a roundabout way of raising the ungallant topic >of whether the ladies concerned put on weight. Though if they put it on >in moderation and around the bottom, who's complaining? Several of them look as if they *lost* weight during their time on the TARDIS, actually. Zoe's Wheel catsuit looks a little baggier in War Games than it did in Wheel in Space, and Victoria seems plumper in Evil of the Daleks than in later episodes - despite the fact that she's supposed to be on a starvation diet when she first appears! Russ Massey: I think it must have been blondes that first did it for me. My earliest remembered turn ons are Jo, Sally Thomsett in 'Man About the House' (another Jo!), Jenny Hanley (presenter of 'Magpie') and Felicity Kendal in 'The Good Life'. I went through several distinct phases, first being impressed by a large bust, then going for long, black hair, then miniskirts and boots. Now I simply don't care very much - nearly every woman I see has some feature that I can find appealing! >Jo also had that barely bridled sexual energy which we can perhaps now >percieve as comically obvious. "all dolled up for a night on the town with >Mike Yates" indeed........ > I know what you mean. Of all the companions, I've always considered Jo probably had the most interesting and experimental sex life :) Whereas Victoria, Zoe and Mel always strike me as virginal (which was part of the reason I came up with Mistress Mel - I saw it as such a complete opposite of the character). 'Distant' Dave: I have to confess to being predictable and being a Peri Lover. I still have a proclensity for buxom brunettes to thisday, and she kept me.... entertained... shall we say, for much of my formative youth. None too subtle though I'll grant you. These days, Lalla has a certain inexplicable appeal (as she was that is..) I did once come across a story on a newsgroup which involvedthe Fifth Doctor tricking Tegan, Nyssa & Adric (!!) into having sex in order to save the Tardis. Does this ring bells for anyone ?? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
